What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

EMDR is a trauma therapy developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro. The theory behind EMDR is that many psychological difficulties are the result of distressing life experiences which have not been stored in memory properly and are unprocessed or blocked. The trauma memories are easily triggered, leading them to replay and may cause distress repeatedly. EMDR is one way to process or unblock these memories. EMDR simultaneously works on the mind, body and emotions which accounts for its success. EMDR involves bilateral eye movements and other forms of rhythmic left-right stimulation. The rapid eye movements relieve the anxiety associated with the trauma. Often EMDR helps people feel better quickly.
